One prison officer and at least 13 prison inmates are feared to have died in protest at Abakaliki prison in Ebonyi state yesterday.
The inmates began protesting at about 9am over the poor condition of living, complaining that the prison officers ration to them small quantity of food to eat. During the protest, dangerous weapons were used to inflict injuries on prison officials.
A team of mobile police officers and soldiers had to be drafted to the prison to restore law and order.
Injured inmates and officers are currently receiving medical attention at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA.
