The Nigerian Senate yesterday passed a bill to criminalize sexual harassment in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, with stiff punishment for lecturers who exploit students.
The bill, which was adopted in the second reading, was referred to the committee on judiciary and human rights for further review.
Motion for the bill was sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege representing Delta Central Senatorial District alongside 57 others.
Omo-Ageg introduced ‘The bill for an Act to make provision for the Prohibition of Sexual Harassment of students by educators in Tertiary Educational institutions and for other related matters, 2016.’
Speaking on the bill, Senator Dino Malaye said: “Mr President of the Senate, Distinguished Colleagues, we should also take cognizance of the fact that female students dress offensively, thereby tempting lecturers who could not resist themselves.”
Malaye also said that all schools should have a dress code and students made to adhere to it.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said that the bill came at the right time and that sexual harassment was a menace in the educational system.
