Buhari orders payment of December salaries

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the immediate payment of December salaries to Federal Government workers.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja at the end of the monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, meeting, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun said salaries were already being paid in response to the Presidential directive.Kemi Adeosun
The Minister said the relevant authorities had commenced the payment of December salaries, adding that people had already started getting alerts.
“We are very conscious of the need that people are paid in time for the festive season,” Adeoshun said.

IG approves promotion of 558 police school teachers

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has given the go head for the immediate promotion of 558 teachers in police primary and secondary schools across the country.Solomon Arase
The promotion is meant to motivate them to perform better and to also address the complaints among the teaching staff.
Disclosing this to newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday, the Director, Directorate of Police Education, DCP Kabiru Ibrahim, said the affected teachers would soon get their letters of promotion.

IG promises to investigate Army, Shiite group clash

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase has promised to carry out a professional investigation into the recent clash between the Nigerian Army and the Shiite Islamic group in Zaria, Kaduna state.Solomon Arase

Ghana president bans first class travel for public officials

President John Mahama of Ghana has banned public officials from first class air travel in the country.John-Mahama
He said this was done to cut wasteful spending.
The ban has come into effect as the country implements an International Monetary Fund (IMF) aid deal to revive state finances, the government said on Tuesday.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has finally released the new power tariff regime, in which it outlined the various rates of increase in energy charges for consumers across the country. sam-amadi-of-nerc
It also announced the removal fixed electricity charges for all classes of electricity consumers and noted that power users would only pay for what they consume.
About two weeks ago, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, revealed that electricity tariffs would increase and urged consumers to comply with respect to paying their bills, as he promised that the sector would record considerable improvement thereafter.

Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini banned from football for 8years

It was further learnt that Gbemisola had sent some of her nude pictures to Kunle on Whatsapp before things went awry between them.

Punch had reported on Friday that Gbemisola, a caterer, had alleged that Kunle asked her out, which she turned down because she had a boyfriend already. She had alleged that the suspect lured her into his parents’ house in Agiliti Estate, Ketu, and raped her.

26-Year Old Rapes Girl He Met On Facebook For The First Time After Luring Her With N15,000


A 26-year-old man, Taiwo Oluwatobi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly luring his Facebook lover to his house, and raping her.

Punch Metro learnt that Oluwatobi had met the 24-year-old victim, identified only as Temitope, on Facebook. He had allegedly lured her to his house in the Alagomeji, Yaba area of the state to collect N15,000, during which he raped her.

It was gathered that the incident happened at the suspect’s friend’s rented apartment on Queens Street, Alagomeji, on Monday, November 30, and the visit was Oluwatobi and Temitope’s first meeting.

Arms Scandal: EFCC May Write Ex-President Jonathan


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission may write former President Goodluck Jonathan in connection with its ongoing investigation into arms procurement scam, The Punch has learnt.

It was gathered that the commission was planning to write the former President because his name had consistently featured in the interrogation of some suspects.

A former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), was reported to have said he disbursed funds from his office based on the instruction of the former President.

Guus Hiddink appointed as Chelsea's interim manager until end of season

Former Netherlands boss Guus Hiddink has been appointed interim Chelsea manager until the end of the season following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

The 69-year-old also managed the Blues on a temporary basis for the final three months of the 2008-09 campaign.

"I am excited to return," said the Dutchman. "Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment. "However, I am sure we can all turn this season around."

Mourinho was sacked on Thursday with champions Chelsea 16th in the Premier League table, one point above the relegation zone.

Hiddink watched Saturday's visit of Sunderland from the stands, sat next to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and former Blues striker Didier Drogba.

Death sentences passed on 66 Nigerian soldiers for mutiny, other charges, reduced to 10 years imprisonment each

The death sentences by firing squad passed on 66 soldiers in January and March 2015 by separate General Court Martials have been commuted to 10 years imprisonment each.

A statement released on Saturday, December 19, by the Acting Director Army Public Relations Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman reads;

"It will be recalled that 71 soldiers were arraigned on several charges in joint trials. The soldiers were arraigned on several count charges that include Criminal Conspiracy, Conspiracy to commit mutiny, Mutiny, Attempt to Commit an Offence (Murder), Disobedience to Particular Orders, Insubordinate Behaviour and False Accusation, amongst others.

They were tried, discharged on some charges but found guilty and convicted on other charges which included mutiny. Out of the number, 66 were found guilty on some of the count charges and sentenced to death, while 5 were discharged and acquitted and 1 was given 28 days Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL).

However, following series of petitions, the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, ordered a legal review of the cases. The directive was carried out to examine the merit of each case. It was on the basis of the review and recommendations that the Chief of Army Staff commuted the death sentences of the 66 soldiers to 10 years jail term. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The cases of other soldiers are being reviewed and will be made public once the appropriate reviews are completed.

Court of Appeal nullifies AkwaIbom governor's election


The court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has nullified the election of the state Governor Emmanuel Udom. The five-man jury this afternoon upheld the petition of the APC candidate in the April 11th election Umana Umana who argued that the election of Governor Udom of the People’s Democratic Party did not conform to the electoral act. The court ordered a fresh election to be conducted within 90 days.

Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of N250m on the condition that each of them will produce a surety who must be a serving or retired ​civil servant ​not lower than the rank of a director.
The judge ordered that the c​ivil servants must also show possession of a property within the FCT worth the same amount​.​

Shi’ite Leader, El-Zakzaky Not With Us- Army

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has disclosed that the arrested Shi’ite sect leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zak-Zaky, is no longer in the custody of the Army.El-Zak-Zaky
Buratai said this when he met with a delegation from the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) at the Army Headquarters in Abuja yesterday.
“As a responsible and law abiding organisation, we will do all that we can to always safeguard lives and property. As for the whereabouts of the Shi’ite leader, he is not in our custody; he has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution because we don’t prosecute. What happened was avoidable and unfortunate, we followed the rules of engagement as enshrined in the constitution but what happened still happened,” he said.
Buratai also dismissed claims in some quarters that the Army was after members of the sect.

Bayelsa guber: INEC fixes January 9 for supplementary election

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has set January 9, 2016, for the conclusion of the governorship election in Bayelsa State.INEC
The governorship election, which took place on December 5 was declared inconclusive after violence erupted in Southern Ijaw local government area.
The spokesperson for INEC, Nick Dazang, who confirmed the new date for election in Southern Ijaw local government said the commission had already issued a public notice on the exercise.
Mr. Dazang said all political parties with candidates in the election had already been notified.

5 killed, 7 injured in the clash between IPOB, MASSOB and JTF in Onitsha

Female suicide bombers attack Borno town, kill six

No fewer than six people, including a member of Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and five suicide bombers were killed in a bomb attack on a security outpost manned by local vigilante group in Borno’s town of Mafa.It was gathered that some female bombers approached a security post manned by the CJTF in Mafa, about 40 kilometres to Maiduguri, Borno State yesterday, killing themselves and one of the youth vigilante.

Northeast Information Officer of the National Emer­gency Management Agency (NEMA), Abdulkair Ibrahim, who confirmed the bomb attack said five members of the CJTF were also injured.

Russian Billionaire's Son Accused Of Strangling Mother To Death

Police have arrested the 19-year-old son of a Russian billionaire on suspicion of strangling his mother to death. Yegor Sosin was allegedly under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest.

Yegor, the son of retail tycoon Igor Sosin, was arrested at the Korston hotel in Kazan, Russia, after a fellow guest reported seeing him walking down a corridor covered in blood. The body of the magnate's ex-wife, Anastasia Sosina, was found in the hotel room she had rented with her son, prosecutors from Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement.


She appeared to have been strangled with the cord of a charger for an electronic device. It was claimed that the two arrived in Kazan to attend the Family Constellations and Cosmic Power workshop of German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, when the incident happened.

US, UK Want Buhari To Probe Shiite/Army Clash


The United States and the United Kingdom have expressed their concern over the recent clash between the Nigerian Army and Muslim Shiites in Zaria, Kaduna. 

The two countries called on President Buhari not to fold his hands but probe the incident.

“While many details of the incidents that reportedly began on December 12 remain unclear, we are dismayed to learn of multiple civilian deaths.  It is essential that all sides refrain from actions that further destabilize the situation.


“The United States calls on the Government of Nigeria to quickly, credibly, and transparently investigate these events in Zaria and hold to account any individuals found to have committed crimes,” the US embassy said in a statement Wednesday.

Appeal Court judgment : Governor Wike heads to Supreme Court

 
Rivers State Governor, Wike Nyesom whose appeal was sruck out today by an appeal court in Abuja has said he is taking his case to the Supreme Court. Wike appealed to the people of Rivers to be calm and says everything still remains the same in the state. Below is a press statement released shortly.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has instructed his lawyers to appeal today's  judgment of the Court of Appeal which ordered fresh governorship  election  in  the  State. In a statement  issued  by Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor on Electronic Media, Governor Wike  stated  that  he disagrees with the judgment, hence his decision  to  exhaust  his constitutional right by challenging  the Appeal Court  judgment  at the Supreme Court.

Governor Wike  called on all his supporters  and the people of Rivers  State  to remain  calm as Justice  will be done at the end of day.

Appeal court nullifies Gov. Wike election, orders a rerun in 90 days


The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has nullified the election of Nyesom Wike as Governor of Rivers state. The three man panel today ruled on the appeal filed by Wike following the October 24th verdict of the Rivers state Governorship tribunal which nullified his election as governor of the state.

APC's candidate in the April 11th election, Dakuku Peterside had filed a petition at the state governorship tribunal, challenging Wike's election. After the tribunal ruled against his election, Wike approached the Court of Appeal to appeal the tribunal's verdict. The Appeal court has ordered a rerun election in the state within 90 days.

Zuma must fall protest holding across South African cities


South Africans have taken to the streets this morning to call for the resignation of their President, Jacob Zuma. The South Africans protesting under the hashtag #ZumaMustFall are aggrieved over the manner in which he is running their country since he became president in 2009.

Zuma caused widespread anger last week when he fired the the country's Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and appointed the unknown Des van Rooyen. 4 days later, he bowed to pressure by dismissing Van Rooyen and appointed the respected Pravin Gordhan to the post.

Policemen Beat Up, Rupture Student’s Intestine

A 200-level university student, John Ekefre, has been admitted into the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after policemen from the Iponri division tortured him and damaged his intestine.
He was said to have been operated on to rectify the internal injury and to remove “the blood clots” that blocked his chest as a result of the torture.John-Ekefre
His elder sister, Mercy Ekefre, told  Punch correspondent, who visited LASUTH on Tuesday that the family had spent over N200,000 on John’s treatment.
“The doctor said his intestine was ruptured and that he had a blood clot. He had a surgery and we are still awaiting the medical report,” she added.

President Buhari says Democracy has come to stay in Africa

High court sacks PDP Acting Chairman, Secondus

A High Court in Abuja, yesterday,  chaired by Justice Hussein Baba sacked PDP's Acting National Chairman, Chief Uche Secondus ordering him to vacate the Chairmanship seat of the PDP within 14 days.Secondus
The court order followed a suit filed by the erstwhile Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Matters, Mr. Ahmed Gulak.
The court said that Secondus assumed the headship of the party through an illegitimate process.

Justice Baba agreed with the plaintiff that the position of the Acting National Chairman of the PDP was originally zoned to the North-East geo-political zone of the country hence, cannot be occupied by Secondus.

National Human Rights Commission to investigate the Army/Shiite clash

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC on Tuesday, has set up a Special Investigative Panel to investigate the circumstances that led to the bloody clash between the Nigerian Army and the Shiite Muslim sect in Northern Nigeria.National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) logo
The clash, which took place during the weekend, took the lives of seven people and injured 10 others.
A statement by the commission, said the panel was set up by the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Prof. Ben Angwe, following a petition lodged against the Muslim sect by the Nigerian Army and some concerned citizens.

Buhari denies receiving $300,000 compensation from Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari has denied allegations that his predecessor President Goodluck Jonathan gave him a monetary compensation of $300,000 after Boko Haram terrorists attacked his convoy in Kaduna last year.Buhari
Buhari in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said he received “nothing untoward, illegal or tending to corruption” from Jonathan before or after the attack.
The statement reads, “Our attention has been drawn to reports making the rounds, especially on internet-based media, that President Muhammadu Buhari received $300,000.00 and up to five armoured SUVs from the Office of the National Security Adviser in the aftermath of the attack on his convoy in Kaduna last year.

Shiite members clash in Kaduna; three dead, many injured

Kaduna was thrown into turmoil on Tuesday following a clash between the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and security operatives in Tudun Wada, Kaduna the state capital.Shiites
A resident alleged that members of the Shiite sect were preparing for a protest against the arrest of their leader Sheik Ibraheem El zakzaky by the military when police operatives swooped on them in Tudun Wada area.
He added that the sect later regrouped at Tudun Nupawa area where many of them were said to have engaged the police in a shootout, leading to injuries on both sides, while about three persons were feared dead.
