PDP releases press statement on AIT ban, says it's dangerous for democracy

Press statement from the PDP on AIT ban, which the APC has
since lifted..
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as
unacceptable the Monday’s directive by the President-
elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to bar a television
house, the AIT, from covering his activities, saying the
suppression of the media under any guise portends
danger for the nation’s democracy.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement
on Tuesday said that after carefully studying the defence
posited by General Buhari’s campaign spokesperson as well
as the smokescreen statement by the APC to cover and
mitigate his anti-media posture, the PDP and indeed all lovers
of democracy are persuaded that the action was not only
unjustifiable, but also unconstitutional and completely against
the spirit of liberty and the rule of law in a democracy.
He said “the PDP as a party that have nurtured the nation’s
democracy in the past 16 years cannot afford to fold its hands
and watch the constitutional rights, media freedom and
personal liberty of Nigerians, the basic tenets of democracy
being demolished.
“We ask, is this a beginning of the feared erosion of the
freedom and personal liberty the media and Nigerian citizens
have been enjoying in the last 16 years under the PDP led-
administration? Has our dear nation finally fallen into the
clutches of totalitarianism and impunity where government
actions will based on egocentric decisions and impulses of
individuals rather than the rule of law?
“While we assure the President-elect of our resolve to run a
mature and responsible opposition based on issues, we are
disturbed by this emerging development and reassure the
Nigerian people that we will continue to stand with them on
issues of democracy and freedom at all times.
“Perhaps, we need to remind General Buhari that part of the
challenge of his new position, even as President-elect is that
he has lost his private life which is now subject to public
scrutiny and media interrogation, as required of the custodian
of the mandate of the Nigerian people.
“The PDP is not oblivious of the background of the President-
elect especially as it relates to the freedom of the media, but
we had thought that having declared to be a converted
democrat, he would make himself amenable to the basic
principles of democracy by following the due process of the
law on any circumstance.
“General Buhari may also wish to be reminded that the
Nigerian constitution upon which provisions he emerged
President-elect, also gave the media powers to cover activities
of public office holders while at the same time providing legal
avenues for redress in the event of any violation. If the right of
the President-elect was in anyway violated by the AIT or any
media house for that matter, he is expected to act within the
law and seek redress in the courts otherwise one would have
no option than to conclude that he is out for personal
vendetta.
“The APC and the President-elect may have one or two
lessons to pick from President Goodluck Jonathan, who
though the most maligned and abused President in the history
of our nation, even by the APC, allowed his actions to be
sufficiently guided by humility, tolerance and the rule of law”,
the PDP said.
The party called on Nigerians not to despair but remain
steadfast and unite in resisting any anti-democratic
tendencies intended to instill fear in them and set the stage
for a dictatorial order and the erosion of their personal
freedom and liberty as citizens, which they have been enjoying
in the last 16 years under the PDP.

All accredited media, including AIT, free to cover President-elect’s activities – APC

APC just released a statement saying all accredited media,
including AIT, are free to cover President-elect’s activities.
Read below...
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that all
accredited media organizations in the country, including
the African Independent Television (AIT), are free to
cover the activities of the President-elect, Gen.
Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its
National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the
party said the incoming Buhari Administration will not
discriminate against any media organization,
irrespective of its role during the electioneering
campaign leading up to the recent polls.
It however enjoined all media organizations to observe the
highest level of professional standards in carrying out their
duties.
”There is a Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism
in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict
adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism
in carrying out their duties.
”There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law,
for media organizations which have wantonly breached the
Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned
themselves to partisans instead of professionals. But such
repercussions will not include barring any accredited media
organization from covering the activities of the President-
elect,” APC said.

NNPC audit reveals double payment of subsidy on petrol & kerosene, spent N3.65trn without approval

The just released audit report by PricewaterHouse Coopers
PWC on the financial management of the NNPC has revealed
that there were many cases of duplicated subsidy payment by
the NNPC to many oil marketers between 2012 and 2013.
According to the report, payment of subsidies for petrol (PMS)
and kerosene (DPK) between January 2012 and July 2013
when investigated had a difference of $980 million (about
N195 billion) due to duplicated payments.
“Our review of the subsidy documentation revealed that
the subsidy due to NNPC between January 2012 and
July 2013 on PMS and DPK import was $8.99billion
compared to the $9.97 billion stated by the
Reconciliation Committee.
The difference was due to the following: Exclusion of October
2011-December 2011 subsidy claims of $1.2billion. This does
not relate to the review period of January 2012 to July 2013;
$0.13billion increase in PMS subsidy claimed for the 19
months period, $0.09billion increase in DPK subsidy claimed
for the 19 months period; duplicated discharges noted in
subsidy computations Our examination of the PMS and DPK
import verified by PPPRA revealed that some discharges were
apparently verified and subsidy advised to NNPC more than
once,” the report stated.
According to Leadership, the report showed NNPC spent
$18.53billion (or N3.65 trillion) as operational costs without a
duly approved budgetary allocation. The report also indicated
that the total gross revenues generated from the federal
government crude oil lifting between January 1, 2012 and July
31, 2013 was $69.34 billion and not $67 billion as earlier
stated by the federal government’s Reconciliation Committee.
The report also stated it was unable to verify the exact
unremitted revenues accruing to the Federation Accounts as it
did not have access to NPDC’s full account. The Nigerian
Petroleum Development Company is a subsidiary of the NNPC.
“We did not have access to NPDC’s full accounts and records
and we have not ascertained the amount of costs and
expenses which should be applied to the US$5.11billion Crude
Oil revenue (net of royalties and PPT paid) per the NPDC
submission to the Senate Committee which should be
considered as dividend payment by NPDC to NNPC for
ultimate remittance to the Federation Account.
Between 12 January and 29 January 2015, NNPC provided
transaction documents representing additional costs of $2.81
billion related to the review period, citing the NNPC Act LFN
No 33 of 1977 that allows such deductions. Clarity is required
on whether such deductions should be made by NNPC as a
first-line charge before remitting the net proceeds of domestic
crude to the Federation Accounts. If these are deemed not to
be valid deductions, then the amount due from NNPC would
be estimated at $2.07 billion (without considering expected
known remittances from NPDC) or $4.29 billion (if expected
known remittances from NPDC are considered).”
The forensic audit became necessary following a letter in
September 2013 by the former governor of the Central Bank of
Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to President Goodluck
Jonathan stating that from January 2012 to July 2013, NNPC
lifted $65 billion worth of crude on behalf of the federal
government but remitted only $15.2 billion into the Federation
Accounts, with $49.8 billion as outstanding to the federal
government. On December 13, 2013, the NNPC responded that
no money was missing.
A Reconciliation Committee comprising representatives of the
CBN, NNPC, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR),
Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Office of the
Accountant General (OAGF), the Budget Office of the
Federation, Federal Ministry of Finance and the Federal
Ministry of Petroleum Resources was set up On December 18,
2013, the Reconciliation Committee, in its report, estimated
the unremitted funds at $10.8 billion while the CBN said it
was $12 billion.
The CBN on February 4, 2014 informed the Senate Committee
on Finance that the NNPC needed to account for $20 billion
as the CBN could only confirm receipt of $47 billion of $67
billion revenue. On February 13, 2014, the NNPC provided
explanations of the $20 billion shortfall while the finance
minister and coordinating minister for the economy
recommended an independent forensic audit. On June 5, 2014,
PwC was appointed by the office of the Auditor General of the
Federation (OAuGF) to conduct a

Akwa Ibom govt warns residents to desist from eating 'Ponmo'

Akwa Ibom state government has warned residents of the
state to desist from eating cow skin popularly known as
Ponmo as research has shown that the consumption of the
cow skin has led to the increase in cancer and liver problems
in the state.
At a press conference in Uyo yesterday April 26th, the state
Commissioner for Agriculture & Natural Resources, Mr. Godwin
Afangideh, represented by Director of Veterinary Services in
the state, Dr. Obot Obot said the high quantity of salt used for
the preservation of the cow skin has been traced to have
adverse effect on the liver of the consumers and also
increases the risk of having cancer
"The state government, through the veterinary services
directorate of the ministry, has embarked on a
sensitisation campaign in some markets in the local
government areas to talk to the people about the
danger of consuming such meat. The veterinary officer,
who was in charge of the sensitisation campaign, went
to different markets and talked to the people on the
imperatives of how to watch out for toxic meat
following reports of its importation into the country.
Cow skin meat, which is five times thicker than
ordinary skin meat, is injected with a toxic substance
called formalin used for its preservation. This formalin
in the long run is capable of causing cancer and liver
problems due to high concentration of salt used for
their preservation.”he said

5 Ways Nigerian Churches Drive Youths Away

Anyone that has had to take care of teenagers or young
people in general knows that it is a very tedious task that
requires patience and understanding. If a parent or guardian
can’t relate to young people in terms of the prevalent youth
culture at the time, the parent/guardian would face a great
deal of frustration in directing most youths towards a moral
path in life. What compounds this issue is that the internet
and modern mass media have given young people so much
information and opportunities such that parent/guardians
can not keep up with their (the youth) thinking.
This is also a problem for many churches as they are not
keeping up with the needs of the youth of today. To lose the
interest of the youth is to lose the future of the church and
below, are five ways churches of today in Nigeria tend to
drive these youths away from the house of God-
1) Ageism (adultism) and disrespect towards younger
people by church staff
From experience, I can say comfortably that Nigerian culture
permeates Nigerian churches, and deeply rooted within
Nigerian culture is adultocracy, in which the respect of the
elderly and adults are prioritised sometimes at the expense
of the youth. For instance, when waiting to see a pastor or
reverend father, young people are made to wait for long
periods with no information while an elderly person would be
given a swift service- the older person would be told how
long he or she is to wait and also be told about the
whereabouts of the pastor/priest.
Another instance is where ushers in the church shout at
younger people when directing them to seat or move in the
church hall but will be calm when they are directing older
people. I have even seen it twice where a church staff
member was shouting and embarrassing a teenage couple
about "fornication" just because the couple were flirting in
the church premises after the church service.
As someone that has been to many churches of different
denominations with various friends in those different
churches, I can say that such behaviour is endemic and it
needs to be changed. Young people too have rights and
feelings. The discriminatory treatment turns the youth off
from coming to church.
2) Lack of relevant preaching to youths
Youth problems are far beyond "respect your parents and
teachers". There are important moral issues facing the youth
such as; sex, porn addiction, on the internet, bullying at
school, abuse from adults, anti-social behaviours and so on.
This is where churches need a good youth pastor who can
relate to such youth problems.
Many churches prefer to speak against pre-marital sex to
teens and young people but they forget that the young
people are more interested in how to approach the opposite
sex or the person that they have a crush on. A good youth
preacher would explain to the youth how to create a God-
fearing relationship with their close friends or partners,
rather than just spouting the usual anti-pre-marital sex
doctrine. Also, when preaching to youth, Nigerian churches
fail to use terms that the young people will understand. For
instance, using a young musician like Wizkid to explain the
problems with a materialistic life would be more relevant to
youth than explaining it with plain theology.
3) Lack of youth programmes
Many churches have little or no youth programmes that
would interest the young people in the church. Even the ones
that do have very boring programmes- they consider "choir
and drama" to be everything young people need. Personally,
I never could sing or act as a youth and so, I didn't really
enjoy the youth programme in my church. There are other
things that could engage the interest of the youth in church
such as trips to religious sites/places and creative classes.
Some churches have good youth programmes, I know of a
few that have football matches among their youth, which is
also a good idea.
4) Refusal to deal with "internet questions"
There are a lot of facts and also nonsense on the internet. It
is inevitable that young people will pick up strange things on
the internet and will want clarification on such things. For
instance, I remember a teenager asking a pastor about the
Church of England's acceptance of gay priests- the pastor
just concluded that the issue is beyond the teen's
understanding. The teenager probably read it on the internet
and was wondering if it was possible on the internet. The
issue here is that pastors or priests should be ready for such
controversial questions from the youth as they have curious
minds at that age and are still learning. Dismissing their
questions will only drive them to find questions elsewhere.
Furthermore, not answering religious questions that pertain
to the church makes it seem as if the church has something
to hide.
5) Resistance to technology
Some churches frown upon the use of Ipads or tablets to
read bible passages. Some churches that have multi-million
dollar buildings prefer to use televisions to broadcast
educational material to youth members instead of multi-
functional projectors. Some churches do not have a
functional website that provides information on church
activities. Times are changing and churches need to adapt.
The youth are becoming more dependent on technology and
there is a need to engage them on that level.

What Has Happened To Christianity In Our Generation?

CHRISTIANITY IN OUR GENERATION HAS BEEN SERIOUSLY
COMMERCIALIZED AND POLITICIZED
By Terfa Naswem
God does not bless us nor measure giving by how much gifts
or offerings we give to HIM or others, but HE blesses us and
measures giving by the reason and sacrifice behind our gifts
and offerings to HIM and others. So let no General Overseer,
General Superintendent, Senior Pastor or any Man-Of-God
deceive you about giving. No matter how much you give to
the Church or anybody, if you give grudgingly or with pride
and with string attached; God will never bless you for such
giving.
I have heard many preachers used human psychology on their
congregations so that they will give as much as they can to
the CHURCH. The worse thing is that most of them use these
gifts and offerings given to the Church in the name of Jesus
Christ our Lord to enrich themselves while aggravating the
sufferings and poverty of church members.
Most of them make it appear as if those who are poor have
been rejected by God and are suffering because of their sins.
The questions that always cross my mind are numerous
whenever I hear most of them preach:
Were these men of God born from rich families? How much
were their parents earning as monthly incomes? And before
they became men of God, and church founders, what were
their monthly incomes? Didn’t they face serious challenges
most of their members are facing today? And when their
churches newly started, how much did they have? Would they
have been as rich as they are today without the churches
which they established or are overseeing? Are they truly men
of God or they are just using the name of God for material
gains?
There are numerous questions still left that space will not
allow me ask. I wonder if any member or follower of these
men of God has ever asked any of these questions. There are
some sermons and biblical teachings that make me very
furious because of their misleading tones.
Most of the leaders of these great churches such as Living
Faith, ECWA and The Redeemed Christian Church of God
(RCCG) among others have established Universities which
most of their church members whose offerings and tithes
including personal donations have been used to establish
such universities and maintain them cannot attend or send
their children to such universities because of the high tuition
fees among other charges. How can one explain this? I don’t
want to go too deep so that I won’t make most Leaders and
Elders including ardent members and followers upset. It
worries me so much that Christianity in our generation has
been seriously commercialized and politicised.
Some of these “Men-of-God” were busy campaigning for a
corrupt leader like Jonathan just because of the benefits they
were getting from him when they even know the truth of his
corrupt deals and his cabinet. This makes me to wonder
where Christianity is heading to. I now understand why
Amaechi accused some General Overseers and Men-of God for
collecting bribe from Jonathan and PDP.
According to Rotimi Amaechi, “Some pastors collected N6
billion and they are circulating documents and telling you not
to vote for a Hausa man, not to vote for a Muslim because
they want to Islamise Nigeria. Tell them to return our N6
billion.
“They gave them N6 billion. They should return it to the
Federal Government coffers. They will tell you that Buhari
wants to Islamise Nigeria. Tell them we are too educated. I
am a Catholic, but no Catholic priest has told me that story
right now in the Catholic Church, because I will ask him how?
“If any Pastor tells you that, tell him to return the money.
Nobody can Islamise Nigeria. They have commercialized
Jesus Christ. They should stop commercializing Jesus Christ.
He is our Lord and Saviour.
“You know what Jesus Christ did in the temple. He chased
them away. We shall chase away those pastors who collected
money from PDP leaders to tell us lies. We shall chase them
away on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ.”....
In reacting to this, the General Overseer of the Redeemed
Christian Church Of God, Enoch Adeboye, asked pastors
who received the alleged N6 billion from the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, to discredit the All Progressives
Congress’ candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, to return the
money.
Prophet TB Joshua of the Synagogue, Church Of All Nations
and Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka of Adoration Ministries are
among the few men of God that did not allow Jonathan and
PDP to buy them for support and fake prophecy.
Some General Overseers and other “men of God” collected
money from Jonathan and PDP and gave Jonathan fake
prophecy that he was the chosen one and that he will win his
re-election bid because he has received the anointing from
God. I don’t want to mention names of those fake men of God
who prophesy the victory of Jonathan here but you can find
out if you so wish.
I always tell my friends and acquaintances that there is
nothing special about being a General Overseer, General
Superintendent, or Senior Pastor of a Church. The only thing
that makes them special is if such people are truly WALKING
IN THE LORD AND IN THE LIGHT OF HIS WORD. Because I
can decide to open a church today and give it a name like:
TOUCH THE SKY GOSPEL CHURCH and claim that God called
me to lead his flock and start exhibiting whatever evil plan I
have under the canopy of being a church founder and my
followers will be loyal to me and do whatever I tell them to do
and preach to them based on how I want them to behave
and what I want them to believe and further create
interdenominational divide.
When I was a student in NKST SEC. SCH. ADIKPO, KWANDE
LGA, BENUE STATE, I was the Bible Study Secretary,
Evangelical Secretary and two-time president of Fellowship of
Christian Students (FCS) and two-time Steering Committee
Coordinator of FCS, ADIKPO ZONE. I was unexplainably
blessed by the infallible GOD and He gave me the wisdom to
understand his words comprehensively. And I want to use
that blessing to tell every Christian toda that the doctrine of
the HOLY BIBLE which is the road map to God is greater than
the beliefs, norms, values, practices, policies, philosophies or
doctrines of any church.
I want to use this opportunity to advise all Christians that for
them to truly differentiate between sermons or teachings that
are not in line with Biblical principles, they must study the
Bible daily and sincerely pray every day to the Almighty God
for wisdom. As for me, I understand the Holy Bible very well
by GOD’s grace and blessings and nobody can deceive me
with any mouth-watering or go-and-bring-money-for-God
preaching.
I want to advise all General Overseers and men of God not to
allow money and political influence bereft them of the power
God because God says in Ephesians 6:10-18 that: “ Finally,
be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full
armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the
devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and
blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against
the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces
of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full
armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may
be able to stand your ground, and after you have done
everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth
buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of
righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the
readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to
all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the
helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the
word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of
prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always
keep on praying for all the Lord’s people”.
From this, it is clear that the moment one armour is missing,
they cannot win the war against principalities and powers of
darkness.
I don’t want to judge any of these MEN OF GOD because God
has not given us the power to judge them but I will always
criticise any of them that goes against what the Holy Bible
upholds.
In fact what even consoles me in all this is because the Holy
Bible says in the book of Matthew 7:22-23 (NIV) that:
“Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not
prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons
and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell
them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you
evildoers!”
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Ladies, See The Things You Can Do To Keep Your Man

This is an interesting piece written by a lady to help other
ladies learn and avoid the looming dangers.
There are certain things that push guys away from you and
sometimes these turn-offs go both ways. Frankly some ladies
find it hard to keep a man because of some things they do.
Read details below:
Drama: This is definitely one of the top things that push men
away. Women tend to be involved in more drama than men.
It’s true that your boyfriend will be there to listen to you
when you’re having issues, but being catty won’t highlight
your best qualities. And being overly dramatic about some
petty issue, such as why he didn’t call you first, will make
him question the relationship. If you are a responsible lady or
want to be one, try not to make a huge deal of something
that can be easily fixed.
Possessiveness: Do you constantly check up on your
boyfriend? If so, you might want to back off a little bit. When
guys receive too many "Where are you?" texts, they tend to
get annoyed. They don’t want to be in a relationship with
their mom. You might think this is just you caring about him,
but to him, it will feel like you don’t trust him, or worse, like
you are trying to control him.
Playing dumb: Unfortunately, we ladies have all probably
done this at some time or other. Truth is that playing dumb
will lead you down the wrong path. He might eventually feel
like you’re taking advantage of him or that you just aren’t
capable of taking care of yourself, let alone you and the kid or
kids when they start coming. Good guys believe a smart girl
is much more worth keeping at home.
Clingy: A guy has got to have his own space! How much
space a guy needs will vary. Some guys think that going out
more then twice a month together is clingy, while others think
that you never leaving his side is clingy. As a lady, make sure
to observe your own man to figure out where he lies on the
spectrum! When you give him what he wants, he will really
appreciate your understanding and thoughtfulness – and he
will try to make the time you do spend together that much
more worthwhile.
Living in the past: It’s okay to share your past once you get
comfortable with your new guy. Just don’t dwell on it. Not
yours, not his, not "ours." Don’t compare him to a fling that
you had before, a sugar daddy or ex-boyfriend. And don't
compare yourself to anyone in his past – and definitely don’t
dwell on a past disagreement that you two had. If you want
him in your future, plan today with him.
Dishonesty: We hate being lied to. So why do we do it to a
man we love? It doesn’t protect a relationship; in fact, it
might destroy it. Communication is key in a relationship, so if
you say things that you don’t mean, what’s the point? Try to
express yourself and allow your man point out things that he
doesn’t understand. Always make an attempt to talk things
out. Believe me, it works wonders!
Remember that time you told him you loved that his shirt,
even though really, you can't stand it? Well, what are you
going to do if he starts wearing it all the time to please you?
That is it, you have all the work to do if you want to enjoy
your man and have him spend his money you wholeheartedly.
Power struggle: I always cringe when I hear people joking
about who wears the pants in a relationship. There’s really no
need to do that. Learn to be humble and work well with your
man. Your friends are loyal to their own men at home, no
matter what they tell you. So don’t be obsessive over who
has more power. Love is what you should ask for from your
man, not his authority. You can!

In response to Blac Chyna I guess. This photo surfaced
yesterday of Tyga flaunting fresh ink - his 17 year old
girlfriend's name is now on his inner right elbow. According
TMZ, sources close to the rapper told them that Tyga got the
tattoo done two days ago to prove to Kylie he is fully
committed to her and no one else. Looks like he got the
tattoo just a day after his ex, Blac Chyna put him on blast by
posting text messages where he was begging for another
chance.

Photos: Buhari meets man who trekked from Lagos to Abuja

Suleiman Hashimu, the man who trekked from Lagos to Abuja
in honor of Buhari's victory at the presidential election met
with Gen Buhari in Abuja today April 24th. Narrating his
experience to General Buhari, Suleiman said;
"I made a promise because of the love I have for Mr.
President that if Buhari should win the 2015 elections, I
will trek from Lagos to Abuja which I have done. I
thank God that I made a promise and I fulfilled the
promise. I passed through Kwara and Niger states to
Abuja. I was trekking from 6.00am to 6.00pm and
anywhere I find myself when it is 6.00pm, I pass the
night there.I spent 18 days from Lagos to Abuja."
Continue...
Once I found myself inside the bush by 6.00pm and I
managed to continue the trek till 9.00pm to a nearby
village. I made this promise two years ago. I am based
in Ibadan and I started my journey from Lagos because
Lagos is the most popular city in Nigeria and I started
from Berger junction in Lagos. I am not bothered about
what people think. It is a promise between me and my
God. I don’t want anybody to believe me. I left Lagos
because I made a promise. Right from Kwara state, I
never walked alone for five kilometres. People always
walk with me to the next village. I work with a
construction company based in Ibadan.”he said

Zoning of National Assembly offices: APC leaders' meeting end in deadlock

A meeting of top members of APC convened to resolve all
disagreements bordering on the zoning of top offices in the
incoming National Assembly ended in a deadlock on at the
Rivers state Governors lodge Abuja on Wednesday April 22nd.
According to Vanguard, the meeting came to a deadlock after
the leaders failed to reach a consensus on where to zone the
office of the speaker of the House of Representatives. The
members were divided between zoning it to the North-East
and South-West. The leaders however agreed on the zoning of
the office of Senate President to the North-Central and the
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, to the
South-East.
Sources say outgoing minority leader, Femi Gbajabiamila and
Yakubu Dogara are being nominated for either speaker or
deputy speaker of the House of Representatives. In attendance
at the meeting were President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari
(retd); Vice-President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; party leader,
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; governors-elect, senators-elect as well
as some top executive officers of the party.

Five Ways to Improve your Saving Habit

The first step to improving your savings habit is to honestly
assess your financial health. After all, you can’t solve a
problem if you don’t know what it is. Improving your savings
habit will help you reach your short- and long- term financial
goals. Before you can save, you need to develop a clear
picture of your expenses and your income.
This will help you work out if you are spending more than you
actually earn and help you to fix the situation by reducing
your expenses – remember it really is easier to cut down
expenses than it is to make more money.
No matter what you’re saving for – whether it’s for
retirement, a new home or a new car, or just to cultivate a
habit of savings - it’s important to start early. When it comes
to saving, the best time to start is now.
There are five (5) steps that will help you start saving:
• First, come up with a personal budget or monthly
spending plan. This will help you plan for expenses, reduce
excess spending, save for future goals, have money put aside
for emergencies and prioritize savings. Separate your income
and expenses but make sure that you update your budget
regularly as these figures may change from time to time. Your
income will include things like your salary, bonuses, retirement
income (if you have retired), income from rents and things like
that. Your expenses may be food and water, housing, clothes,
transportation, education, utilities (such as phone bills,
electricity, internet and such) and personal (such as hair and
personal care). Once you have estimated how much you will
earn and spend, subtract your expenses from your income. If
you have money left over, you can then decide how to spend,
save or invest this left over money. If your expenses are more
than your income, however, you must adjust your budget by
reducing your expenses.
• Second, set realistic savings goals. Know what it is
you are saving for and how much you need to save to achieve
that goal. Make sure that the amount you are saving is
meaningful but doable.
• Three, pay attention to your lifestyle; manage lifestyle
inflation. Most of us will spend more money if we have more
money to spend. As we move up in our careers, we tend to
spend more. This is known as lifestyle inflation. Lifestyle
inflation works against our ability to save and invest. You
must remember that every extra naira spent now, is less
money in the bank. People tend to spend more because they
want to be and appear like other people – neighbours, friends,
even family. But you must remember that these people may
owe a lot of money for them to live the kind of life that they
live. You need to decide whether you want to join these
people in a life of debt or save to secure our families’ futures
and our retirement.
• Fourthly, understand the difference between needs and
wants. “Needs” are things that you must have in order to
survive, such as food, shelter, clothing, healthcare,
transportation and such. On the other hand, “wants” are
things you would like to have, but that you do not necessarily
need for survival. Sometimes it is difficult, especially these
days, to tell the difference between the two but you must
honestly do this if you want to manage your spending and
save.
Lastly, explore savings accounts. The easiest way to save is
to put the money in a savings account. Try as much as
possible not to touch the money you save. To make sure that
you do not touch this money you can put it in a high yield
savings or investment account that has higher interest rates.
Since your money must stay in the account for a period of
time, this will help you to resist any temptation to touch it.
These tips are really simple and if you stick to them, you
should see an improvement in your savings. This has been

convicted foreigners will be taken to Nusakambangan, the
prison island off Java where they are to be executed. Those

Suleiman Abba and the Making of a Partisan Police, By Femi Falana

Suleiman Abba Esq.
Acting Inspector-General of Police,
Police Headquarters,
Louis Edet House,
Abuja, FCT.
ILLEGAL POLICING OF THE REPUBLIC
Since you were appointed the Acting Inspector-
General of Police by the President of the Republic
on July 31, 2014 the Nigeria Police Force has been
involved in partisan politics to the detriment of
law and order in the country. Permit me to draw
your attention to three glaring cases of political
bias recently displayed by the Police under your
leadership.
Firstly, the Osun State governorship election which
took place on August 9, 2014 was almost marred by
the Police and other security forces which arrested
and detained over 700 leaders of the All
Progressive Congress (APC). Indeed, some electoral
officers who were assumed to be members of the
APC were also railroaded to police custody. But for
the personal intervention of Professor Attahiru
Jega, the Chairman of the Independent National
Electoral Commission, the said electoral officers
would not have been released. Thus, the election
would have been disrupted by the police and other
security forces whose duty it was to maintain law
and order during the democratic exercise.
However, the detained APC leaders who were
released after the election have not been charged
to court for breaching the provisions of the
Electoral Act or any other law whatsoever.
Secondly, Mr. Joseph Mbu, the controversial
Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of
Zone 7 of the Nigeria Poilice Force announced a
ban any rally demanding for #bringbackourgirls
within the federal capital territory. The ban was
designed to assuage the feelings of some officials of
the Federal Government who are embarrassed by
being reminded of their constitutional duty of
rescuing the over 200 Chibok girls who were
abducted 6 months ago by the nihilist boko haram
sect. In a judgment delivered last week, the Federal
Capital Territory High Court declared the ban
illegal, null and void on the ground that it
constituted an infringement of the fundamental
rights of the patriotic campaigners to freedom of
assembly and expression guaranteed by the
Constitution. In spite of the judicial indictment you
have not deemed it fit to call Mr. Mbu to order for
the reckless abuse of police powers.
Thirdly, you caused the security details of
Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, the Speaker of the
House of Representatives to be withdrawn last
week on the ground that he had decamped from
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. As
if that was enough, you decided to usurp the
judicial powers of the federation which are
exclusively vested in the courts by section 6 of the
Constitution when you claimed that the Speaker
had lost his office and seat as a federal legislator
having contravened section 68 (1) (g) of the
Constitution. By your illegal pronouncement you
disregarded section section 50 (2) (c) thereof which
stipulates that the Speaker of the House of
Representatives can only be removed by a
resolution passed by votes on not less that two
thirds majority of the members of the House.
No doubt, your actions and utterances in the
circumstance have exposed the Police to
unwarranted ridicule as Nigerians are not
unaware of the fact that when the Ondo State
legislators elected on the platform of the Labour
Party (LP) decamped to the PDP last month your
office did not declare their seats vacant. In
particular, you did not withdraw the security
details of Honourable Jumoke Akindele, the
Speaker who led her colleagues to dump the LP for
the PDP. In the same vein, Honourable Ahmadu
Fintiri, the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of
Assembly and his colleagues who decamped from
the PDP to the APC and have since returned to
PDP. You did not have cause to declare their seats
vacant. Neither have you withdrawn the security
details of the Honourable Fintiri.
Thus, by subjecting Honourable Aminu Tambuwal
to selective persecution on ground that he
decamped from the ruling party you violated his
fundamental right to freedom from discrimination.
As you are no doubt aware, it is a breach of section
42 (1) of the Constitution and Article 2 of the
African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights to
subject any citizen of Nigeria of a political opinion
to disabilities, deprivation and restrictions to
which other citizens who hold alternative views or
opinions are not made subject. Since the security
details of other Speakers who decamped from the
APC and LP to the PDP have not been withdrawn
those of Honourable Tambuwal were illegally
withdrawn. They ought to be restored without any
further delay.
From the information at my disposal your
harassment of the Speaker was instigated by the
Presidency. But having regard to section 215 (3) of
the Constitution which enjoins you to carry out the
“lawful directions” of the President of the Republic
with respect to the maintenance and securing of
public safety and public order the actions taken on
the Speaker are illegal and unconstitutional in
every material particular. Therefore, you should
withdraw your pronouncement on the office and
seat of Honourable Aminu Tambuwal and advise
the ruling party to seek redress in the Federal High
Court on the constitutional implications of the
defection. Furthermore, unless he is removed by
his colleagues in the House of Representatives or by
a competent court in the land Honourable
Tambuwal remains the Speaker of the House.
Neither the Police nor any other agency of the
Federal Government can be allowed to resort to
self help on the matter.
As law and order in the country cannot be
maintained by a compromised Police institution
you may want to resign your appointment if you
are not prepared to discharge your onerous
constitutional responsibilities without fear or
favour, affection or ill-will. Before making up your
mind may I remind you of the eternal injunction of
the Supreme Court in the case of Attorney-General
of the Federation v Atiku Abubakar (2007) 10
NWLR (pt 1041) 1 at 183. As the undisguised bias
of both the INEC and the Police could not be
justified over the illegal removal of the Vice-
President for decamping from the ruling party to
one of the opposition political parties the apex
court held inter alia:
“Having regard to the nature of the function which
the Nigeria Police Force also performs, that
body must also insulate itself such that impartiality
and fairness may at all times be ascribed to
it. A situation where both of them ( the Inspector-
General of Police and the Independent National
Electoral Commission INEC) appeal in the instant
case is very much in bad taste. They have both
thrown the quality of impartiality and fairness
which they must possess to the winds. Their acts
capable of eroding the public confidence in them.
Unknown tob them, they may be said, by the
the public, to be biased and therefore not worthy
to be regarded as impartial umpires. This trend
must not repeat itself for the good of the nation.”
Finally, if the trend of subverting the Constitution,
the Police Act and the Electoral Act by your good
self and other top police offices continues unabated
we shall not hesitate to approach the Federal High
Court to determine your competence and
suitability to superintend and manage the Nigeria
Police Force in the public interest.
Yours Sincerely,
Femi Falana SAN.

Court dismisses motion to drop murder charges against Kano 'child bride'

A court in Kano yesterday rejected a motion to have murder
charges against the child bride accused of killing her husband
and three of his friends dismissed, saying there was enough
evidence for the case to proceed.
Wasila Tasi'u was 14 when she married Umar Sani, 35, and
killed him and three others with rat poison. She could face the
death penalty if convicted of using rat poison to kill him.
"I am of the opinion that there is a case against the
accused," High Court Judge Mohammed Yahaya said.
"As such, I overrule the submission of no-case from
the defence counsel."
Tasi'u's lawyers had argued that the state failed to establish
her intent to kill Sani and questioned the reliability of a key
prosecution witness.
The witness, a seven-year-old girl named Hamziyya who was
identified as the sister of Sani's other wife, testified that
Tasi'u gave her money to buy the poison on April 5 last year,
the day Sani died.
The defence said that relying on testimony from a minor
contravened Nigeria's Evidence Act and that the state's case
should therefore be thrown out.
The families of both the deceased and the accused have
rejected claims that she was forced to marry a man more
than twice her age, noting that 14 was an appropriate age to
marry and that Tasi'u chose Sani from a range of suitors.
Some locals have called for Tasi'u to face stiff punishment to
discourage other girls from taking similar action if they
become unhappy in their marriage.
But rights activists have demanded that Tasi'u be
rehabilitated as a victim of a forced marriage, which likely
included incidents of rape.
Tasi'u has remained largely stoic through her appearances in
court so far, crying when charges were first read against her,
but otherwise sitting silently, often with her head bowed.
On Tuesday she stood quietly in the dock, with her head fully
covered in a sky-blue hijab.
