Wole Soyinka slams Police for seeking to stop planned protest

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has called out the Nigerian police for seeking to stop the protest planned by a musician, 2face Idibia, against Federal Government alleged non-performance.
Soyinka’s position was contained in an article he sent to an online medium, SaharaReporters, on Sunday.

The Nobel laureate declared that  he was shocked to learn from media reports that the office of the IG could issue a statement stopping the protest.

Donald Trump bid to restore travel ban rejected

A US Federal appeals court on Sunday rejected a request by the Department of Justice to reinstate President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The Trump led administration had lodged the request with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals as part of an appeal against a lower court order temporarily suspending the travel ban on citizens from seven mainly Muslim countries.

Judge William Canby, Jr. in Phoenix and Judge Michelle Friedland in San Francisco did not give a reason for their denial in a two-paragraph ruling.

Cameroon wins AFCON 2017

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Sunday emerged champions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating Egypt 2-1 in the final.

Goals from Nicolas N’Koulou and Vincent Aboubakar sealed a comeback victory for Cameroon after Mohamed El Nenny put Egypt ahead in the 22nd minute.

Cameroon have now won the Africa Cup of Nations for a fifth time.

President Buhari extends vacation

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday extended his 10-day vacation. The extension was contained in a three-paragraph statement made available by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina  to journalists.

He said Buhari had already dispatched a letter to the National Assembly on the extension but did not specify the duration of the extension.

Vice President Osinbajo wants state police introduced

Acting President and Nigerian's Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, yesterday, in Abuja during a lecture he delivered entitled “Economic Dimension of the National Security: The Nigerian Experience,” advocated the introduction of state police.

He also said there were ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to reform the Criminal Justice System in Nigeria. This, he said, will help in repositioning the courts and the entire judiciary.

According to him, the reforms would also take into consideration the methods of appointing judges, their salaries and other welfare packages and the new justice system will ensure stiffer penalties for corruption.

Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard has retired, bringing to an end a 21-year professional career.

The 38-year-old, who spent last year with New York City in Major League Soccer in the US, announced his decision on social media yesterday.

CAN, PFN calls on President Buhari to resign

The South South chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, have called on President Buhari to resign honorably if he can not stop the killings by Fulani herdsmen and revive the economy.

The religious body made the call at its meeting in Warri, Delta state yesterday February 2nd.

Senate to review construction costs of vice president official residence

The Chairman Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Dino Melaye addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday said the National Assembly will review the contract for the construction of the official residence of the Vice-President.

Melaye alleged that the cost of the project may have been inflated, stating that the gatehouse alone costs N250m.

He also alleged that the contractor handling construction of the official residences of the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives may have also inflated costs.

Solution to Southern Kaduna crisis in CONFAB report – Goodluck Jonathan

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan in his presentation to the United States House Sub-Committee on Africa on Wednesday said that religious violence and extremism may destroy Nigeria if they are not addressed.

He said the solution to the Niger Delta crisis and Southern Kaduna killings was already included in the report of the 2014 National Conference, held in Abuja.

The former President said those involved in the killings gained confidence from the inactions of the government.

We won't accompany Apostle Suleiman to DSS office – CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said it would not accompany General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleiman to the Department of State Security (DSS) office on Monday.

The DSS had invited Apostle Suleiman after he urged his followers to kill any Fulani herdsman who comes close to them in a video that went viral.
