The Senate on Thursday called on the Federal Government to overhaul the National Youth Service Corps Scheme following the deaths of some corp members in various camps across the country.
The Chief Whip of the Senate, Olusola Adeyeye (APC Osun Central) moved the motion and cite it as a matter of urgent public importance.
The Senate demanded that medical facilities in all NYSC orientation camps across the country be improved and that experienced medical personnel be deployed to NYSC medical centres.
The Senate mandated its Committee on Sports and Youth Development to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of three corps members in Kano, Bayelsa and Zamfara recently.
Senator Adeyeye decried the recurrent death of corps members in NYSC camps, as he expressed worry that officials of the scheme were not living up to their responsibilities.
He said; “The Senate notes with sadness the death of three Corp members: Miss Ifedolapo Amoke Oladepo who died in Kano NYSC Orientation Camp and Miss Elechi Chinyerem, who died in Bayelsa Orientation Camp both on Tuesday, Nov.29.
“Also, Mr Ukeme died in Zamfara Orientation Camp on Thursday, Dec.1.
“We are deeply worried that the death of these corp members is becoming a recurrent decimal in almost all NYSC camps across the country.
“We are further concerned that NYSC officials are not up and doing in their official duties as they expose these Corp members to all manner of dangers.”
