The National Judicial Council, NJC, has suspended seven senior judges arrested on October 7th by the State Security Service over allegations of corrupt practices.
The judicial body had initially refused to suspend the accused judges despite public pressure, saying the allegations against them had not been substantiated.
It however said the judges had voluntarily stepped down from court sittings.
However, the council resolved to suspend them after the council’s meeting which took place between November 2nd and November 3rd.
A communique issued at the end of the meeting, and signed by NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, said the decision was taken to avoid allowing persons under investigation to to partake in presiding over judicial matters at the same time.
