Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen has been recommended by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
Onnoghen has been put forward to the National Judicial Council (NJC) for further recommendation to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Onnoghen, a Justice of the Supreme Court since 2005 is set to succeed outgoing CJN Justice Mahmud Mohammed whose tenure ends November 10, when he will clock the 70 years mandatory retirement age for justices of the appellate court.
Onnoghen’s appointment as the new CJN according to Section 231 of the Constitution, will be done by President Buhari on the recommendation of the NJC subject to confirmation by the Senate.
Onnoghen, a native of Biase LGA of Cross Rivers State, was born on December 22, 1950.
