The African Union on Monday failed to elect a new head after a meeting by African leaders in Kigali.
Current AU President Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma was due to stand down from post but leaders were unable to vote a successor to lead the continental body during its 27th summit meeting held in the Rwandan capital.
None of the three candidates were able to muster the two-thirds majority required to win in the secret ballot.
28 of the 54 member states abstained from the final round of voting forcing a postponement of the election and an extension of Dlamini-Zuma’s term.
