One person confirmed dead, 20 injured following a mock terror drill at a Nairobi university

A terror drill went wrong leaving one person dead and at least 20 injured on Monday, November 30, at Nairobi's Strathmore University when sounds of gunfire sparked a panic.

The students were said to have fled after hearing gunshots fired during the security exercise thinking it was a terror attack. Images shows terrified students standing on window ledges.

The university confirmed the mock drill had been organised by the university and security agencies to test the student's alertness and response.

The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Esther Kidambi from the university's administration. According to Mpasho News, Ms Kidambi succumbed to head injuries sustained when she jumped from the 3rd floor of a building as she tried to escape. She was pronounced dead by health officials at the university's clinic.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has denied claims that Strathmore University had informed the police about the terror drill. Nairobi head of CID Nicholas Kamwende said they have opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
