An explosion went off yesterday near a Mosque in Kano, with the suicide bomber carrying the explosive dead, a police official said.
According to witnesses, the casualty figures is unclear, although a police spokesperson said the teenage female suicide bomber has been confirmed dead.
The spokesperson for the Kano Police Command, Magaji Majiya, said the teenage bomber detonated the explosive at 9:30 p.m yesterday after she was prevented from accessing the Umar Bin Khatab mosque along Zaria Road.
The incident happened just as faithful were dispersing after observing the late night (Tarawih) prayer, witnesses said.
“She was trying to cross over to the mosque, but she was stopped,” Mr. Majiya said. “She immediately detonated the bomb and died immediately.”
Monday night’s bombing in Kano came 24 hours after a similar attack on a restaurant and a mosque in Jos, the Plateau State capital, left no fewer than 44 persons dead and 48 others injured.
Another attack on a church in Potiskum, Yobe state, also on Sunday, killed six people.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but security agencies believe the bombings have the imprimatur of the extremist Boko Haram sect that has been killing and maiming innocent Nigerians in the past six years.
