CBN fires officials involved in N8bn currency scam

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday said that it had
invoked disciplinary measures against its officials that were
involved in the N8bn currency fraud in its Ibadan branch.
The CBN, in a statement by its Director, Corporate
Communications Department, Ibrahim Mu’azu, stated that
some of the affected members of staff, mainly middle-level
officers, had been either summarily dismissed or placed on
indefinite suspension depending on the level of their
involvement in the scam.
The statement issued in Abuja read, “The Central Bank of
Nigeria would like to inform the general public of the
chronology of events that led the management of the CBN to
hand over some unscrupulous staff to the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission for prosecution.
“During a routine internal audit of the bank’s cash destruction
activities in September 2014, the CBN Briquetting Panel,
comprising senior bank staff from different branches, noticed
some anomalies at the Ibadan branch and immediately
reported this to the bank’s management.
“On further investigation ordered by the governor, it was
discovered that a systematic scheme, which has been on for
several years, was being run in which mutilated higher
denomination notes originally meant for destruction were
swapped with lower denomination currencies.
“This practice, known as interleafing, basically labels a box
with a higher value than its true content.
“As soon as the bank’s internal investigations concluded
beyond reasonable doubt that some wrongdoing had occurred,
the affected members of staff, who are middle-level officers,
were, depending on gravity of offence, either summarily
dismissed or immediately placed on indefinite suspension on
October 21, 2014, and all handed over to the EFCC for further
investigation and prosecution.”
The bank also said that following the incident, a nationwide
audit of all 37 branches of the CBN were conducted, noting
that the outcome of the investigation showed that this was an
isolated scheme at the Ibadan branch of the bank.
The apex bank, the statement noted, would continue to
collaborate with the EFCC to ensure that the affected CBN
employees, as well as their accomplices in some commercial
banks, were brought to justice.
The EFCC had said on Tuesday that five top officials of the
CBN and 16 others were to be arraigned for alleged complicity
in an N8bn currency fraud.
The Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson
Uwujaren, said in an electronic mail on Sunday that the
suspects would be arraigned at the Federal High Court,
Ibadan, Oyo State, on June 2 for circulating defaced and
mutilated currency notes.
Uwujaren had said, “The Economic and Financial Crime
Commission has concluded arrangement to arraign in court
five top executives of the Central Bank of Nigeria implicated in
a mega scam involving the theft and recirculation of defaced
and mutilated currencies.
“The suspects, drawn from various business units of the apex
bank, are to be put in the dock by the anti-graft agency
before a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, from
Tuesday, June 2, 2015 to Thursday June 4, 2015. The
remaining 16 suspects are drawn from various commercial
banks that were found to have conspired with the CBN
executives to swing the heist.
“All the suspects who are currently in the custody of the EFCC
are now ruing the day they literally allowed greed and craze
for materialism to becloud their sense of judgment and
responsibility, when they elected to help themselves to tonnes
of defaced Naira notes.
“Instead of carrying out the statutory instruction to destroy
the currency, they substituted it with newspapers neatly cut to
Naira sizes and proceeded to recycle the defaced and
mutilated currency.”
“The fraud is partly to be blamed for the failure of government
monetary policy over the years as currency mop up exercises
by the apex bank failed to check the inflationary pressure on
the economy.
“The lid on the scam, which is widely suspected to have gone
on unchecked for years, was blown on November 3, 2014 via a
petition to the EFCC alleging that over N6,575,549,370.00 was
cornered and discreetly recycled by light fingered top
executives of the CBN at the Ibadan branch.”

Armed robbers rape 18 year old Auxillary nurse in Lagos

An 18 year old Auxiliary nurse working at a hospital on Santa
Maria Street, in the Egan, Igando area of Lagos State was
allegedly raped by a gang of armed robbers that stormed the
hospital last Thursday May 28th.
According to Punch , this will be the third time the hospital will
be hit by armed robbers. The armed robbers reportedly gained
entrance into the hospital after overpowering the security
officer, then they moved from ward to ward, robbing patients
of their valuables.
A worker in the hospital who spoke on the condition of
anonymity said
“The girl was actually the one who went to the police
station to report. She accused the management of the
hospital of dereliction of duty and said she was raped
by the men. She also alleged that the owner of the
hospital did not provide adequate security for his
workers and subjected her to mental torture by losing
her virginity through rape.” The Medical Director of the
hospital who was arrested after the incident but was
released on Bail by the police , denied claims that the
nurse was raped. "“It is an everyday affair here. The
robbers come to the street almost every time to rob
residents. It is the third time they would come to the
hospital. They came in and dispossessed patients of
their valuables. When the incident happened, we took
her through some tests and discovered she was intact.
She is still a virgin and nothing happened to her. It is
just that as a young girl, she suffered some shocks and
that is all. But if you heard she was raped, well, maybe
she was a victim of circumstances and that obviously
was not my fault. If I have a house and robbers raid
my house and then rape somebody, is that my fault? I
am doing all these because of the girl. And if it is her
parents or anybody that spreading wrong information, I
don’t think I am to blame. I have already tried my
best.”he said
The Lagos state Police spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu when
contacted about the incident, said he wasn't aware of such
report.

The drunk Knight leaves hilarious note for drunk man found passed out in car

While passed out over his steering wheel, some saintly
stranger took it upon themselves to hide this drunk man's car
keys, leave him with a bottle of water and an anonymous
note.
The note said: "I found you passed out drunk with your car
running, so I hid your keys under the atlas in your back seat. I
hope you get home safe. I’m not your hero. I’m your silent
guardian. A watchful protector. The drunk knight."
It is unclear what happened to the drunk man, found
somewhere in Massachusetts, but the image was posted on
Reddit by the "drunk knight".
He also added: "I found this guy passed out drunk with
his car running outside of a bar at 3.00am.
"The bars close at midnight where I am, so I tried to
wake him up, but he just kept mumbling and continued
to sleep.
"I decided to hide his keys in the backseat, just in case a
cop came, and left him a note and some water.
Despite his act of kindness the poster still came under fire
on reddit for not reporting the man to the authorities for
attempting to drive.

Presidential spokesperson speaks on why Pres. Buhari hasn't moved into Aso Rock days after swearing in

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President
Buhari, Shehu Garba says ongoing cleaning and refurbishment
has prevented President Buhari to move into his official
residence in Asovilla days after he was sworn in as President.
"As far as the President is concerned, the place (his official
residence) is not ready yet. Workers are cleaning and
refurbishing the place. Once the exercise is completed, the
President will move in.”he said
Meanwhile there are reports that staff of Asovilla, particularly
security officers, are currently in a state of confusion as to
what their job schedule will be like this week as President
Buhari has not appointed some key positions in his cabinet,
one of which is the Chief of Staff who plans his daily
schedule. One of the workers in the Presidency who spoke on
condition of anonymity said "As we are talking now, we do
not know his (the President’s) activities for tomorrow (today).
We cannot plan for his activities. We do not know which
groups he will be meeting or how many people he will be
meeting.
It is when we have an idea of those who he will be meeting
that we can schedule them regarding allocation of time and
venue. These would have been easier for us if a Chief of Staff
is in place. For now, we are waiting for the two big men
(President and Vice President) to move into the Villa so that
we can do our jobs. For now, we are only securing the seat of
power without the men of power,” he said.

in Lagos converged and demonstrated their intellectual ability

The Talent Boom is part of Tecno's Corporate Social

and encouraging the brilliant students in the society.
According to him: “Tecno is not only about buying and selling.
We have identified the need to improve the standard of
education, that is why we decided to sponsor this event every

talented people, there are several students who do not have
opportunities to excel despite their gift.
The scholarship that we give them will go a long way in their
life and will also pass a message about the importance of
hard work and reading. “The talent Boom is a great idea that
everyone will want to be a part. Our theme for this year is
'Give the children a future'.
That is why Techno is supporting the children morally and
academically. We are glad that three students won the
scholarship". The trio of AdebanjiAyomide, Daniela Ajayi and
Martins Aneleba that won the scholarship said that they were
grateful to Tecno for making their lives better and they will not
