VP Osinbanjo says devaluation of Naira is not an option

Vice president, Yemi Osinbajo yesterday said that further devaluation of Naira was not an option to solve the current economic down turn in the country.

He talked about the Federal government's plan to set up a $25billion  Infrastructural Fund which would be sourced from local and international sources including Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Fund.

 He said:
“I don’t agree on devaluation and it is not that I am doctrinaire about it. In the first place, it is not a solution-we are not exporting significantly. And the way things are, devaluation will not help the local economy.
“What we need to do is to start spending more on the economy and then things will ease up a bit.”
The Vice President disclosed that already other sovereign wealth funds have indicated interest in the fund which would be used to address the nation’s decaying road, rail and power infrastructures.

He added:
"This is our approach to speeding up the country’s infrastructural development.”
Osinbajo also said that the current foreign exchange restriction is only a temporary measure to ensure that “we don’t deplete our foreign exchange substantially,” at a time when the prices of oil in the international market is dropping.

He added that the restriction was for the benefit of the country's economic stability.

He said:

“I am not sure devaluation is the issue, but how to ensure foreign direct investment which is more useful”, he said.

The Vice President also reassured investors who already have contracts and loan commitments that the federal government would work with the Central Bank of Nigeria to protect legitimate businesses from being affected by the current foreign exchange restrictions.

The Super Eagles will tackle Swaziland in the first leg on November 13, while  the return leg is at the Adokiye Amiesiamaka Stadium in Port Harcourt four days later.

As expected, there was no place in the squad list for Fenerbahce loanee Emmanuel Emenike and Vincent Enyeama, who have both announced their international retirement after falling out of favour with the coach (Emenike denied this).

But  experienced duo of John Obi Mikel (Chelsea) and Ahmed Musa (CSKA Moscow) are among the players that will begin training at Bolton White Apartments, Abuja on November 8.

Rio2016: Don't Blame me If Nigeria Fails to Qualify- Samson Siasia

Chief Coach of Nigeria’s U-23 national team, Samson Siasia says that he should not be blamed if Nigeria fails to qualify for the Rio Olympics next month because his team has been treated like “orphans”.

According to him, the team has not been paid their allowances in the last 9 months and they have not been provided with training kits as well.
“Nigerians should know that we are not well prepared (for the championship) and I should not be held responsible for whatever happens. We are orphans.
We have not been paid our bonuses, while the Super Eagles were paid full bonuses even when they drew in Burkina Faso. We have been without allowances for the past nine months.
How can you survive in this kind of situation, where you have not been paid for three months, no car, no training kits. We have to wash to wear our kits. It’s embarrassing.
The NFF keep saying they don’t have money. Nobody from the football federation is concerned about our daily welfare in the camp.

At times, we fuel vehicles to carry us to training. The players’ morale is down as most of them have not been receiving salaries from their clubs. How can one expect good output from these set of players?

To me, Nigerians are liars. It has gotten to the situation that I won’t just sit down quietly and die, I’m tired of the system.

I want Nigerians to know at this juncture that I won’t be responsible for any bad result that may come out of our campaign in the African U-23 Nations Cup. I should not be held responsible for whatever happens at the championship”he lamented

China To End One-Child Policy, Allowing Families Two Children

China’s Communist Party brought to an end the decades-old “one-child” policy on Thursday, when leaders announced that all married couples would be allowed to have two children in a bid to reverse the rapid aging of the labor force.

The announcement came after the party’s Central Committee concluded a four-day meeting in a heavily guarded hotel in western Beijing where the committee approved proposals for China’s next five-year development plan, which starts next year.

The Chinese limit of one child for most families, which was enacted to slow population growth, has led to criticism in the past.

Senate queries approval of N63.5bn contract for Abuja Airport’s 2nd runway

The Senate, yesterday, queried the approval of N63.5 billion for the construction of the second Runway for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, saying it was an attempt to ‘steal and rape’ Nigerians of the country’s wealth.
The Senate called on the federal government to reduce the unrealistic cost of construction and for the government to monitor the contract award process.

Presenting the motion, Senator Melaye said that the contract for the construction of the runway was previously cancelled by the last administration after allegation of over inflation of contract.

Melaye, said that the contract was awarded by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, at N64 billion after ratification by the Bureau for Public Procurement, BPP, contended that there was also  the need  for the construction of a second runway since, according to him, “the existing one is not only bad but inadequate.”

He said: “The publication that the contract is already undergoing review and to be awarded at N63.5 billion as published by newspapers is another attempt to steal and rape Nigerians of our common patrimony. Further convinced by the fact that the entire Gombe Airport with 36km runway cost of N8.2 billion; Jigawa Airport cost N12 billion, Enugu Airport was constructed and expanded at 13 billion naira and Akwa Ibom Airport at N18.05 billion .
“This astronomical amount is about four times the cost of constructing a brand new airport in Nigeria. As a representative of the people, we must advise that due process  and strict adherence to Public Procurement Act be observed in the said contract of the Second  Abuja  Airport  Runaway. If this not brought to attention of the government now, there may be another fraud in the making, given the comparative analysis of cheaper cost across  the country. “
The Senate President also complained about the cost and said that  there was the need to stop what he described as the reckless expenditures, while awarding contracts in the country.

Deputy involved in throwing student across the room during arrest has been fired

Deputy Ben Fields, the police officer involved in a confrontation with an unnamed student at a South Carolina high school on Monday has been relieved of his duties on Wednesday as a result of the incident.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott during an interview with CNN said it was unfortunate about the incident but after watching the 3rd video that emerged, they had to let him go.

He said, the Police officer followed protocol until when he threw the girl across the room.

He said according to their training and what's acceptable when taking a suspect down, they are required never to let go of a suspect during a confrontation or an arrest but that he violated that rule when he had at the desk and threw her thereby losing contact with her.

Lott also said that the teacher and the Assistant Principal thought what Deputy Fields did was right, he said they both agreed with him but that according to the Police training he didn't follow protocol.

The teacher said the student was on her phone during class and was asked to put her phone away but she refused. The Assistant Principal was called in the matter and repeated the same thing to the girl but again she refused.

Then they asked her to leave the class, an instruction which she ignored, so they called in Deputy Fields to take her out of the class. Deputy Fields asked her to get up and leave the class, she ignored him, he repeated the request, again she ignored him and that was when he picked her up and threw her across the room.

Lott said:
“When the officer puts his hands on her initially, she reaches up and she pops the officer with her fist.” He did right when he tried to remove her from her desk but broke protocol when he threw her across the room"
He said Deputy Fields was sorry about how he handled the incident and wished he had handled it differently.

Deputy Fields' Lawyer is preparing to fight to have his client reinstated in the force.

IBB urges Nigerians to support the Govt & military in the fight against Boko Haram.

In an exclusive interview with Sunday Sun at his Minna Hilltop Mansion, former head of state Ibrahim Babangida spoke on Buhari's Ministers, Boko Haram, life after power and other sundry issues. While expressing confidence in the calibre of Nigerians chosen to serve in the Buhari cabinet, appealed to Nigerians to support the government and Armed Forces in the fight against Boko Haram.
"First of all, Nigerians should know that it is not a war limited to the North-east. It touches every part of Nigeria and even outside Nigeria. Therefore, the populace must support whatever action the government is taking because it is a Nigerian problem and must be solved by Nigerians. So, I am only appealing to Nigerians to support what the government and Armed Forces are doing. That will go a long way in curtailing this"
Asked what kind of support he had in mind, the former Military president said:
"Let me put it this way. The cause for which Nigerian Armed Forces are fighting is a legitimate cause. Therefore, it has to be supported. If it isn't, nobody would care. It is a legitimate cause, and all of us, as long as you are a Nigerian, you have to support that cause"

He however noted that praising the Army and the Government is not the only way to show support.
"Well, praising, I don't think it is the only support we can give. Maybe you were a small boy in 1967 during the civil war. You would find that Nigerians were mobilized to support that war and every citizen was making one contribution or the other, in kind, moral or material support. So, it entails material support and moral support in fighting such a cause"

Emir Of Kano Strips Late Emir’s First Son Of His Title

The emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, has stripped the eldest son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, Lamido Bayero, of his traditional title of Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.

Premium Times gathered that a few months after ascending the throne, the new emir wrote to Mr. Bayero, seeking him to return to his duty as Ciroman Kano and District Head of Gwale.

Palace sources told Premium Times that Mr. Bayero’s refusal to either reply the letter or report to the palace, angered the emir.

The issue however died down when Mr. Bayero was appointed managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

But when Mr. Bayero was recently relieved of his duty as managing director of the NPA by President Muhammadu Buhari, the emir directed the Emirate Council to write to Mr. Bayero again.

“When a letter was written to him again, he neither responded nor appeared in person to explain his reasons.

“His Highness first reasoned that the local government of Gwale was too important to be left vacant, and so he elevated the son of Emir Inuwa to be the district head.

“And now the title of Ciroma is also stripped,” a top palace source said.

Perhaps in order to douse tension in the palace, sources said, the emir however appointed Mr. Bayero’s younger brother, Nasiru Bayero, to replace him as the new Ciroman Kano.

A statement by Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sunusi, said the removal and the subsequent replacement were with immediate effect.
